She was pregnant at the time of her death, expecting a daughter named Ava. Mercedes and her husband, Trea "Norbert" Carter, who was 31 years old, were attending the picnic when the incident occurred. The couple had been married for less than a year and were preparing to celebrate their first wedding anniversary in October.
The shooter, Jason D. Iverson, 29, is Mercedes's brother. He allegedly arrived at the picnic and engaged in an altercation with his sister and her husband. Witnesses reported that tensions escalated quickly; after an initial confrontation, Mercedes and Trea attempted to leave the scene with a 13-year-old boy they were caring for. As they tried to escape to their vehicle, Jason followed them and opened fire with a handgun. In the barrage of gunfire, Mercedes was struck and incapacitated, while Trea managed to flee but was pursued by Jason into a nearby bathroom where he was shot multiple times.
Both Mercedes and her unborn child were pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a hospital. Trea Carter succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The 13-year-old boy sustained a graze wound but survived the incident.
Following the shooting, Jason Iverson was apprehended by police as he attempted to leave the park on foot. He faced multiple charges including three counts of aggravated murder and additional counts related to attempted murder and felonious assault. In March 2024, Jason Iverson pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault related to the shooting of his own son during the incident. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
