The Youngstown Police Department launched an investigation into Lewis' death, which marked the fifth homicide in a 14-day period during a year when overall homicide rates had decreased compared to the previous year. Capt. Jason Simon of the Youngstown Police Department's detective division emphasized the importance of investigative work, forensic evidence, and public cooperation in solving the case.
On October 30, 2023, authorities charged 18-year-old Darnell Jones with murder in connection to Lewis' death. Jones, who had addresses in both Austintown and Warren, Ohio, was already in custody at the Trumbull County jail at the time of the charge. On November 9, 2023, Jones was indicted on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, felonious assault, and other related offenses.
The case against Jones developed further, and by September 19, 2024, he had been formally indicted on charges of aggravated murder, murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault. At this point, Jones was 19 years old. It's worth noting that Jones had a prior criminal history, including an incident in April 2023 involving a stolen vehicle and a foot chase with Niles police, which resulted in his arrest and the discovery of an AK-47-type rifle in the vehicle.
