Deborah Baker was a 53-year-old Black woman and mother living in Toledo, Ohio. A neighbor who had known her family for at least 15 years described them as “good people” and said the shooting came as a “shocker.”
On the evening of November 20, 2023, a fatal incident occurred inside the family’s home in the 2200 block of Warren Street. According to a police affidavit, Deborah’s 18-year-old son, Joshua Brown, was at home when he heard someone walking up the stairs.
He reportedly became scared, grabbed a handgun he had on his lap, and went out into the hallway. He fired a single shot, which struck his mother.
First responders were dispatched to the home and found Deborah suffering from at least one gunshot wound. They transported her to an area hospital, where she later died. The Lucas County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy and determined her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the chest, ruling the manner of death a homicide.
Police arrested Joshua Brown at the scene and charged him with reckless homicide. Affidavits filed in the case indicated that he may have fired his gun in a case of mistaken identity, believing his mother was an intruder. After his arrest, Brown initially pleaded not guilty. He later withdrew that plea and pleaded guilty to the charge of reckless homicide. In February 2024, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his mother’s death.
