Travis Williams was a 32-year-old Black man from Toledo, Ohio. His life was cut short in an act of violence in early 2024.
On February 24, Travis was involved in a fight in the 800 block of North Huron Street. During the altercation, a man allegedly pulled out a gun and shot him. When Toledo police officers arrived, they found Travis unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his neck and jaw area.
First responders treated his injuries at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital for emergency care. Despite medical efforts, Travis Williams died from his injuries several days later, on February 29.
Detectives investigating the homicide quickly identified a suspect, 40-year-old Matthew Sanders Jr. Police issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of felonious assault, noting that additional charges were expected. Authorities stated that no gang activity was suspected in the shooting.
Sanders was ultimately charged with murder and felonious assault for his role in Travis's death. On August 16, 2024, he entered an Alford guilty plea to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and having weapons while under disability. A judge sentenced Sanders to consecutive prison terms, giving him 14 to 19.5 years for involuntary manslaughter and an additional 36 months for the weapons charge. The case was closed with his conviction and sentencing in August 2024.
