On March 14, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Dayton, Ohio, resulting in the deaths of 17-year-old Javonta Morgan and 14-year-old Corey Prater. The shooting took place in the 1600 block of Miami Chapel Road, near Louise Troy Elementary School, at approximately 7:19 p.m. as storms rolled through the northern Miami Valley.
According to reports, a group of boys was involved in a confrontation that led to the fatal shooting. A neighbor called 911 just after 7 p.m., reporting that a young boy had been shot and that people had scattered from the scene. The Dayton Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately launched an active investigation into the double homicide.
In the weeks following the shooting, law enforcement agencies pursued leads to identify and apprehend the suspect. On April 23, 2024, a significant breakthrough in the case was announced. A 14-year-old boy, who had been wanted in connection with the murders, was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Illinois.
The arrested teenager, identified as Johnson Jr., was accused of shooting and killing both Javonta Morgan and Corey Prater. Following his arrest, the suspect faced murder charges in relation to the deaths of the two Dayton teens. The incident had further repercussions beyond the initial tragedy. On March 25, 2024, during the funeral proceedings for Corey Prater, another violent incident occurred. Family members leaving the funeral were pursued and shot at by individuals in a Chrysler 300. Two men, Thomas Michael Peck Jr. and Daviontay Maurice Travis Hunter, were subsequently arrested and charged in connection with this shooting. While it remains unclear if this incident was directly related to the original murders, it highlights the ongoing cycle of violence that has affected the community.
