Joseph Burley Edwards, a 48-year-old resident of New Carlisle, Ohio, was fatally shot on March 24, 2024, during a confrontation that escalated outside a home in Park Layne. The incident occurred around 9:20 PM when Edwards was involved in an argument with Glen James Sexton, a 24-year-old man from the same area. The Clark County Sheriff's Office reported that Edwards suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately one hour later.
The confrontation began when Sexton and a female passenger arrived at the residence on Slayton Drive to meet Edwards. Following a brief interaction, Edwards exited the vehicle but then abruptly returned to the house. Sexton parked his car and subsequently confronted Edwards outside. During this heated exchange, Sexton retrieved a firearm from his vehicle after Edwards struck him in the face. In response, Sexton fired the weapon, fatally wounding Edwards.
Following the shooting, deputies found Sexton sitting in his vehicle with his hands raised. He was arrested at the scene and charged with murder. He was later held at the Clark County Jail while awaiting further legal proceedings. On April 2, he was indicted on two counts of murder and one count of felonious assault by the Clark County Common Pleas Court.
In addition to the shooting incident, law enforcement discovered Douglas Davadis Searcy II, a 45-year-old man hiding nearby during their investigation. Searcy was arrested on an unrelated felony warrant for drug possession but is not connected to the homicide case involving Edwards. The investigation into the shooting remains active as authorities continue to gather evidence and details surrounding the events leading up to this tragic incident.
