Beatrice Porter, a 63-year-old woman from Garfield Heights, Ohio, was tragically shot on June 29, 2024. The incident occurred at her residence in the 12800 block of Reindeer Avenue. Porter's husband discovered her unresponsive, lying in a pool of blood, and immediately contacted the authorities. Upon arrival, officers found Porter with shallow breathing.
The suspect in this heinous crime was identified as De'Lawnte Hardy, Porter's 24-year-old grandson. According to prosecutors, Hardy allegedly stole a gun from Porter and shot her in the face. After the shooting, Hardy fled the scene on a bicycle.
Initially, Porter was placed on life support at MetroHealth Medical Center. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries on July 4, 2024, as confirmed by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.
The case took a shocking turn when, just days after shooting his grandmother, Hardy was involved in another violent incident. In the early morning hours of July 4, Cleveland police officers, including Officer Jamieson Ritter, were searching for Hardy in connection with the assault on Porter. During this operation, Hardy allegedly shot and killed Officer Ritter.
Hardy was subsequently apprehended and faced multiple charges. He was initially held on a $5 million bond for the murder of Officer Ritter. Later, a Cuyahoga County grand jury returned an indictment against Hardy, which included charges for both the murder of his grandmother, Beatrice Porter, and Officer Jamieson Ritter. The charges encompassed three counts of Aggravated Murder, two counts of Attempted Aggravated Murder, one count of Murder, and several other related offenses.
Family members of Beatrice Porter described her as a beautiful person, both inside and out. The motive behind Hardy's alleged actions remains unclear, as relatives were unable to provide insight into what might have led to this tragic event.
