Sixteen-year-old Sydney Garcia-Tovar, a Hispanic female, was tragically shot and killed on July 23, 2018, in Fairfield Township, Ohio. She was with a group of people outside Tyler's Creek Townhomes when bullets struck her car as she was leaving, hitting her in the back of the head. Garcia-Tovar was rushed to a local hospital but sadly passed away the next day.
The investigation into her death led to the arrest and indictment of two individuals.
Markeylnd Townsend, a 22-year-old at the time of the shooting, was indicted on charges connected to the crime in April 2021. Townsend, who was already serving a three-year sentence for an unrelated robbery, was believed to be involved in the shooting but it was not confirmed if he was the actual shooter.
Another individual, Jordan Spain, who was just 14 years old at the time of the incident, was also charged with Garcia-Tovar's murder. Spain was arrested in 2022 and indicted by a grand jury in March 2023. He originally faced one count of murder and two counts of felonious assault but eventually pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter. Spain was sentenced to 10 years for involuntary manslaughter and 3 years for a firearms charge.
The case was part of a larger investigation into a drug deal and robbery plot. Garcia-Tovar and three others had driven to the Tyler's Creek Townhomes for a drug deal, with the back seat passengers believing it would be a robbery of the people purchasing drugs. During the exchange, words were exchanged, and Spain and Townsend opened fire on the car, hitting Garcia-Tovar in the head.
Despite the arrests and charges, Garcia-Tovar's family continues to seek answers and justice for their daughter. They described her as an ROTC cadet at Hamilton High School with aspirations of becoming a Marine. The family has expressed that Garcia-Tovar was in the wrong place at the wrong time and did not deserve to die in such a tragic manner.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to connect others to the crime and bring further justice for Sydney Garcia-Tovar.
