On July 12, 2024, a shooting incident occurred in the rear parking lot behind the Avondale Town Center, located in the 3500 block of Reading Road in Cincinnati, Ohio. The incident, which took place around 2:30 a.m., resulted in two women being shot.
Nyema Norton, 29, was one of the victims of this shooting. She was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment.
However, despite medical efforts, Norton succumbed to her injuries on August 26, 2024, more than six weeks after the incident.
Following Norton's death, the Cincinnati Police Department arrested 23-year-old Akira Fletcher on August 31, 2024. Fletcher was charged with murder and felonious assault in connection with the shooting. She is currently being held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail.
The case took an unusual turn when, on August 31, 2024, just one day before her arrest, Fletcher posted two videos on Facebook showing the shooting and the events leading up to it. In these videos, Fletcher claimed she was being attacked by Norton and another woman. The footage shows a confrontation where Norton appears to be holding a knife and then a rock, with Fletcher alleging that Norton had slashed her tires.
According to Fletcher's account, she had called 911 multiple times asking for help, stating she was being punched and that Norton was trying to get into her car. The videos show an escalating situation, with Fletcher's car windows being shattered and her repeatedly warning the other women that they would "get clapped".
The incident culminated in Fletcher firing four shots from inside her vehicle, which were captured on the video she posted. Initially, the Cincinnati Police Department had considered the case as potential self-defense. However, the situation changed, leading to Fletcher's arrest and indictment.
A Hamilton County grand jury has since indicted Fletcher on additional charges including murder and felonious assault. The case has raised questions about self-defense laws and the use of social media evidence in criminal proceedings.
