On November 3, 2024, Gene Clay Sutton III, a 19-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, was fatally shot in a violent incident that has since drawn significant attention from law enforcement and the community. The shooting occurred around 3:20 PM in the 1400 block of Demorest Road, where police responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Sutton suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 3:47 PM.
The circumstances surrounding Sutton's death indicate that he was involved in a meeting with at least two unidentified males in the parking lot of a nearby strip mall just prior to the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing Sutton drive a maroon Ford F-150 and interact with these individuals. Following the shooting, he attempted to flee but lost control of his vehicle shortly thereafter and crashed on a bridge south of Bonnie Court. On November 11, a 17-year-old male was taken into custody by SWAT officers in connection with Sutton's murder.
