The man identified as the shooter was Ian Michael Downs, a 30-year-old from Littlefield, Texas. Initially, Downs faced a charge of Aggravated Battery. Following Trujillo's death, this charge was upgraded to Murder.
However, the Ninth Judicial District Attorney's Office ultimately determined that Downs had acted in self-defense and the charges were dismissed.
The investigation into the shooting involved the collection of video evidence from doorbell and other security cameras. While no single camera captured the entirety of the event, investigators were able to piece together a sequence of events from multiple videos. He worked as a self-employed auto-mechanic and was known for his passion for fishing and helping others. He was survived by his parents, two sisters, a brother, his fiancée Tessa Rodriguez, and three stepdaughters.
