In the winter of 2023, a confrontation in northeast Albuquerque tragically ended the life of a 14-year-old boy. The young male's death on a Friday night was the culmination of a dispute that escalated with dire consequences. According to the Albuquerque Police Department, the incident was being investigated as a possible justifiable homicide.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began with a fight involving several teenagers and residents of an apartment complex located on Tramway
near Copper. The altercation escalated to the point where the group of teens reportedly chased some individuals into an upstairs apartment unit, continuing the confrontation. It was during this turmoil that one of the teenagers allegedly threw rocks at the apartment's window.
From within the apartment, a resident, whose children were also inside, fired a weapon at the group of teens. He had reportedly warned them that he was armed as they were attempting to enter his home. The single shot fired struck the 14-year-old, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
In the aftermath, the resident who fired the weapon was questioned by police. He maintained that he acted in self-defense to protect his family. After providing his statement, he was released, and at the time, no charges were filed against him. The police indicated that they believed the shooting was an act of self-defense but stated the investigation would continue. No suspect was named, and no arrests were made in connection with the teenager's death.
