Devin Caballero, an 18-year-old from Albuquerque, New Mexico, died on May 25, 2023, in a shooting incident near Constitution and Morris. The case, initially investigated as a homicide, took place at 1221 Propps St NE.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a drug deal that turned into an attempted robbery. According to police reports, Caballero was in a car with Lucas Crespin, intending to rob Paul Gonzales during the transaction.
The situation escalated when Caballero attempted to drive away. Gonzales, clinging to the car window and being dragged alongside, engaged in a close-range shootout with Caballero.
In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement made two arrests. The primary suspect, 19-year-old Paul Gonzales, was apprehended and charged with Caballero's death nearly a year after the incident, in May 2024. A second arrest was made on June 3, 2024, when detectives took 18-year-old Lucas Crespin into custody for his role in the attempted robbery that led to Caballero's death.
The Albuquerque Police Department has since closed the case, with both suspects now in custody. This incident highlights the dangerous intersection of drug-related crimes and violence in the Albuquerque area, resulting in the tragic loss of a young life.
