In the pre-dawn hours of August 13, 2023, a five-year-old girl named Galilea Samaniego was asleep in a mobile home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was in a bedroom with her two sisters at her babysitter's residence in the Vista Del Sol mobile home park. Shortly before 6 a.m., the calm was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Occupants of two stolen Kia Soul vehicles drove by the trailer on Paseo del Canto Drive SW and fired multiple shots. One of these bullets penetrated the home and struck Galilea in the head. She was rushed to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries.

The investigation by the Albuquerque Police Department soon revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but Galilea was not the intended target. Detectives determined that the actual target was the teenage grandson of the woman who was babysitting the children. This teenager had been involved in a long-standing feud with one of the suspects, a dispute that reportedly originated in middle school over a girl and had escalated in the months leading up to the fatal shooting. The assailants had intended to target him, but instead, their actions claimed the life of an innocent child. Investigators connected shell casings from the scene to other recent shootings, which helped them identify the suspects.

Within a short period, authorities identified and arrested five teenagers in connection with the drive-by shooting. The suspects were 19-year-old Sencheray Renee Hernandez, her 17-year-old boyfriend Jose Luis Ramirez, his 15-year-old brother Alan Ramirez, 15-year-old Alexander Barraza, and 16-year-old Yahir Carballo. They all faced a series of serious charges, including murder, conspiracy, and multiple offenses related to the shooting and the use of stolen vehicles.

The legal process that followed saw all five individuals facing justice for their roles in the senseless killing. In the subsequent months, all five reached plea agreements with prosecutors. Alexander Barraza and Sencheray Hernandez were among those who pleaded guilty. Ultimately, the court handed down significant prison sentences. Jose and Alan Ramirez were each sentenced to 20 years in prison for their involvement. Yahir Carballo received a 16-year sentence, while the remaining two defendants also received sentences for their parts in the crime that cut short a young girl's life.
