Christopher Sanchez, a 37-year-old Hispanic male, was a hardworking and well-regarded mechanic in his Albuquerque, New Mexico community. Known for his kindness, he worked at JJ's Premier Tire & Services and was a father and fiancé. His life was brought to a violent end in the pre-dawn hours of August 27, 2024, at his home on Adams Street NE.
Around 3:20 a.m., Sanchez was alerted that a group of people were in his driveway attempting to steal his truck.
He went outside to confront them and was ambushed in a hail of gunfire. The assailants fired as many as 27 rounds, killing Sanchez before fleeing the scene. Witnesses told police that the shooters continued firing toward Sanchez as he lay on the ground.
Albuquerque Police Department homicide detectives quickly began investigating, identifying several suspects, most of whom were teenagers. Shortly after the shooting, New Mexico State Police SWAT officers arrested 16-year-old Jeremy Jones in the nearby city of Rio Rancho. After his arrest, Jones allegedly admitted his involvement in both the attempted vehicle theft and the fatal shooting. He was booked into a juvenile detention center on an open count of murder, aggravated burglary, criminal damage to property, and multiple conspiracy charges. Investigators also asked the public for help locating a white or silver SUV, possibly a Ford Escape, connected to the other suspects.
Nearly a year later, in July 2025, another key suspect, Jovanny Rios, turned himself in to police. Rios, who had recently turned 18, was considered a ringleader of the group. He had a prior violent history, including an attempted murder charge from an incident when he was 14. He had been released from a juvenile facility just months before Sanchez’s murder. A judge ordered Rios to be held in custody until his trial.
Jeremy Jones was ultimately charged as an adult for his role in the killing. In August 2026, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the death of Christopher Sanchez.
