On the evening of August 29, 2024, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the life of 38-year-old Hispanic female Barbara Sophronia Chavez, known affectionately as Barbi, was tragically cut short by gun violence. That night, an officer in the vicinity of the 1000 block of Valencia Drive SE heard the sound of multiple gunshots. As police were investigating the area, two individuals flagged them down and led them to an apartment where a woman had been shot.
The victim, identified as Barbara Chavez, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Barbara, born on May 6, 1986, was remembered for her deep love for her family, a passion for music, and a particular fondness for frogs. Those who knew her described an outgoing personality, an infectious laugh, and a bright smile that left a lasting impression. Despite facing challenges in her life, her joy and love for her family, especially her two daughters, Bella and Barbara, never wavered. Her kind-hearted and joyful spirit was a source of strength and laughter for her loved ones.
The investigation into her death determined that a man had knocked on the door of an apartment at 1015 Valencia Drive SE, intending to retrieve some belongings he had left inside. Following a brief conversation with people in the apartment, he fired several shots into the dwelling, fatally striking Chavez. Less than a month later, on the evening of September 26, the Albuquerque Police Department arrested 33-year-old Houston Coate in connection with the murder. After attempting to flee on foot, Coate was apprehended by detectives. He has since been charged with an Open Count of Murder, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Shooting at an Occupied Dwelling, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. The homicide case is now considered closed.
