In the small city of Hobbs, New Mexico, a life full of promise was tragically cut short on October 19, 2024. Ja’Brian OKeith Lowe, a 17-year-old Black / African American male, was the victim of a fatal shooting that has since led to the arrest of a suspect.
On that Saturday, a Lea County Sheriff's deputy noticed a silver Kia swerving into oncoming traffic and initiated a traffic stop. Inside, the deputy discovered Ja’Brian Lowe slumped over the wheel, suffering from a gunshot wound.
His 16-year-old passenger informed the officer that the driver had been shot. Lowe was rushed to Covenant Health Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The teenage passenger recounted a harrowing tale to investigators. He explained that prior to getting into the car with Lowe, he had been involved in an altercation. As they were driving, a red Ford Focus pulled up alongside their vehicle, and shots were fired, striking Lowe.
Law enforcement was able to track the suspect's vehicle using surveillance footage from a nearby intersection. This led them to Adalberto Verdugo, a 22-year-old resident of Hobbs. Upon questioning, Verdugo admitted to firing at Lowe's vehicle, but claimed it was an act of self-defense. He alleged that he saw the barrel of a gun pointed at him from the other car. However, a search of Lowe's vehicle and of the occupants revealed no firearm. Verdugo was subsequently arrested and is facing multiple charges, including murder and discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle.
Ja'Brian, born on July 28, 2007, was remembered as an active and helpful young man. He was a beloved son, a fiancé, and a father to a young son. His family and friends recall his bright smile and big eyes that could light up a room. He had a love for music, games, and fishing, but his main priority was always his family. Though his life was brief, the impact he made on those who knew him was significant, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.
