In the early hours of August 1, 2023, the life of 15-year-old Manuel Garcia, a Hispanic male, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire near the University of Nevada, Reno. The incident, which also claimed the life of 17-year-old Santiago Rodriguez, unfolded around 12:25 a.m. in the 1500 block of North Virginia Street, sending shockwaves through the community.
Reno Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting and discovered a chaotic scene.
They first located one juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound. Moments later, a second victim, also a juvenile male with gunshot wounds, was found in an adjacent parking lot. Emergency medical services rushed both teenagers to Renown Regional Medical Center, but their injuries proved to be fatal. Manuel Garcia was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that both he and Santiago Rodriguez died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led to arrests. Police determined that the shooting was not a random act and that the individuals involved were known to each other. On the same day as the shooting, a 17-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody and charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. A few days later, on August 4, the Reno Police Department arrested a second suspect, a 16-year-old male juvenile, who was also charged with open murder with a deadly weapon. One of the suspects was identified as 17-year-old Stefan Howard Jr. The arrests brought a small measure of resolution to a senseless act of violence that ended two young lives.
