In the early morning hours of October 28, 2023, the life of 17-year-old Tyrell Prince Jones was tragically cut short in a drive-by shooting in a Las Vegas neighborhood near Washington Avenue and Sand Hill Road. The Black/African American teenage male was walking with a friend to his house after a group hangout when the incident occurred.
Around 3:30 a.m., a vehicle, later identified by police as a white Hyundai Sonata, drove past and someone inside opened fire, fatally wounding Jones.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department dispatch received a 911 call from Jones's friend reporting the shooting. When officers arrived at the 3800 block of Braddock Avenue, they found Jones suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to University Medical Center's trauma center, where he died approximately an hour and a half later.
The parents of Tyrell Jones, Jazella Galindo and Terry Jones, remember their son as a loving brother who was passionate about music and had a strong faith in God. They described him as a bright and amazing young man with a beautiful smile, who they raised to be a child of God.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is actively investigating the homicide and has sought the public's assistance in identifying the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting. Authorities have released video footage hoping someone will recognize the white Hyundai Sonata. More than a month after the shooting, bullet holes remained at the scene, a stark reminder of the violence that took place. As of early December 2023, police were still reviewing footage and preparing to issue search warrants in the ongoing search for those responsible for Tyrell Jones's death.
