In the pre-dawn hours of December 27, 2023, Jerry Lopez, a 39-year-old Hispanic male, left his Las Vegas home for his job as a driver for a medical linen supply company. A devoted husband and father to seven children, six of whom were adopted from the foster care system, he had recently received a promotion and was proud of his new role as a Customer Advocate. His wife, Karen, would later recall how he would kiss her and each of their children before leaving for work.
On this particular morning, his journey was tragically cut short just minutes from his home.
Unbeknownst to Lopez, a violent crime spree was unfolding across the city. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Justin Davidson, had earlier shot and killed his own mother at their family home. Davidson, heavily armed, then engaged in a series of carjackings and shootouts with law enforcement. As police pursued Davidson, Lopez, seeing the approaching emergency vehicles, dutifully pulled his family van over to the side of the road near Durango Drive and West Mistral Avenue.
It was a decision with fatal consequences. Davidson, fleeing from police in a stolen SUV, pulled alongside Lopez's van and opened fire, striking him. Davidson then exited his vehicle, fired another shot into the van, and pushed Lopez's body out onto the street. He then took control of the van and ran over Lopez as he fled the scene. The tragic encounter was brief and brutal, an act of senseless violence that left a community in shock and a family shattered.
The police pursuit of Davidson continued for a short distance. Officers fired numerous rounds into the stolen van, eventually bringing it to a stop. Inside, they found Davidson deceased. Investigators later revealed that Davidson had a history of legal troubles and had amassed an arsenal of weapons. In the aftermath, the community rallied around the Lopez family, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars through a GoFundMe campaign to support them in their time of immense grief. Jerry Lopez was remembered by his friends and family as a man deeply devoted to his faith and his family, a shining light in the lives of those who knew him.
