Kyla Bianca O'Neal, a 31-year-old certified nursing assistant and mother of three from Lakeville, Minnesota, was fatally shot on January 8, 2023. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an Amazon Fulfillment Center where she worked. O'Neal, who was nine months pregnant at the time, was found unresponsive with a single gunshot wound to the right side of her neck.
The perpetrator was identified as Donte Rapheal McCray, 32, O'Neal's ex-fiancé and the father of her unborn child.
Earlier that day, the couple had been arguing over McCray's infidelity, which led to O'Neal ending their relationship. Despite this, O'Neal had picked up McCray from his mother's house to drive him to work at the Amazon facility.
According to police reports, security camera footage showed McCray exiting O'Neal's vehicle and opening the rear passenger-side door. As O'Neal attempted to drive away, McCray ran after the car. When O'Neal reversed, an open car door pushed McCray backward. She then parked the vehicle, at which point McCray opened fire.
Initially, McCray claimed the shooting was accidental, stating he was clearing ammunition from a firearm. However, he later admitted to intentionally shooting O'Neal out of anger when she backed the car into him. Prior to the incident, McCray had allegedly threatened O'Neal and her family, saying, 'You all ain't bulletproof,' and warning he would kill her if she brought another man near his children.
O'Neal was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Hospital staff performed an emergency C-section to deliver her baby boy, named Messiah. Tragically, after nine days on life support with minimal brain activity due to oxygen deprivation caused by the shooting, Messiah O'Neal passed away on January 17, 2023.
In October 2023, Donte McCray pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder by drive-by shooting for the deaths of both Kyla and Messiah O'Neal. On December 12, 2023, he was sentenced to a total of 47 years in prison, with 306 months for Kyla's death and 261 months for Messiah's death, to be served consecutively.
