On September 5, 2023, 29-year-old Hannah Nicole Jansen Parmenter of Elk River, Minnesota, was tragically killed in a murder-suicide incident at the Whitebirch Resort in Breezy Point. Her mother, 54-year-old Melanie Michele Jansen of Maple Grove, was also a victim in this heartbreaking event. Authorities determined that Melanie's partner, 59-year-old Michael Charles Toner, fatally shot both women before taking his own life.
The bodies were discovered by Melanie's son and his wife, who
arrived at the resort to visit their family members. After receiving no response at the door, they looked through a window and saw the victims inside, prompting them to call 911. Autopsies confirmed that both women died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Toner died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Hannah was remembered as a kind and generous individual who, along with her mother, touched many lives with their selflessness. A GoFundMe page established to support the family described both women as 'kind, generous, selfless, and genuine,' noting that they operated a home business together, with Melanie working as a hairstylist for over 30 years and Hannah as an esthetician.
This tragic event marked the 22nd and 23rd confirmed intimate partner homicides in Minnesota for the year 2023, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence on families and communities.
