Drew Johnson was a 35-year-old man from Saint Paul, Minnesota. According to a memorial page, he had attended Champlin Park High School and Mankato University and worked in concrete and waterproofing.
In the early hours of Monday, December 11, 2023, a chaotic scene unfolded at a home in Saint Paul’s Hamline-Midway neighborhood. Around 1:45 a.m., a woman on the 1300 block of Englewood Avenue called 911 to report that an intruder she knew by name, Drew Johnson, was at her residence.
During the call, a male resident got on the line and told the dispatcher that he had fired multiple shots and that the person was down on the front porch. A short time later, dispatchers received a second 911 call from the same area. The caller, a man, said he was dying before the line went silent.
When police officers arrived, they found Johnson on the front porch suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported him to Regions Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries hours later. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office would later confirm that Johnson’s death was a result of the gunshot wounds.
Investigators took a 29-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman who were inside the home to police headquarters for questioning. Both declined to be interviewed and were booked into the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder. However, they were released from custody the next day without being charged, pending further investigation.
As of December 2023, police said their investigation was continuing. Once complete, the case will be forwarded to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office to determine whether any charges will be filed. The case remains unsolved.
