On February 18, 2024, in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, 33-year-old Stephen Erik Grytdahl was fatally shot. His younger brother, 30-year-old Connor Bruce Grytdahl, was arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities received a 911 call from Connor around 11:20 p.m., during which he reported shooting his brother. Upon arrival, deputies detained Connor and found Stephen deceased at the scene.
Earlier that evening, Connor had contacted the Grant County Sheriff's Office to report that Stephen
was consuming alcohol, allegedly violating his probation terms. Deputies visited their residence, confirmed Stephen's alcohol consumption, but were unable to reach his probation officer. The brothers were advised to separate for the night. Later, Connor claimed that Stephen confronted him aggressively, leading to a physical altercation. Connor stated he retrieved a handgun and, during the confrontation, shot Stephen in the chest.
Following his arrest, Connor was charged with second-degree unintentional murder and held on a $1 million bail. He appeared in Grant County 8th Judicial District Court, where he applied for a public defender; however, his request was denied due to financial ineligibility. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted local authorities in the ongoing investigation.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the Elbow Lake community. Stephen and Connor were among four brothers, and their father's obituary from 2017 indicates a family with strong ties. Connor, a salesman, is a father of three children. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have left many searching for answers as the legal process continues.
