On June 29, 2024, 22-year-old Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif of Faribault, Minnesota, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Amazon Fulfillment Center in Lakeville. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner confirmed that Cariif died from a gunshot wound to the chest, ruling his death a homicide.
According to authorities, the incident stemmed from a dispute over a missing flashlight attachment for a handgun.
Cariif and two coworkers, including 24-year-old Mohamed Aden Hared, had carpooled to work that day. Hared, who possessed a permit to carry a firearm, brought his handgun equipped with a flashlight attachment, leaving it in the car during their shift. During a break around 1 a.m., Hared noticed the flashlight attachment was missing and accused his coworkers of stealing it. The confrontation escalated during a subsequent break at 4 a.m., leading to a physical altercation between Hared and Cariif. During the struggle, Hared drew his firearm and fired two shots, one of which struck Cariif in the chest, resulting in his death at the scene.
Hared was arrested at the scene without incident and later charged with second-degree intentional murder. Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena expressed condolences to Cariif's family and condemned the senseless nature of the violence. Hared's bail was set at $2 million without conditions, and his next court appearance was scheduled for July 15, 2024.
This tragedy marked the second fatal shooting at the Lakeville Amazon facility in recent years. In early 2023, a pregnant woman was shot and killed in the same parking lot, underscoring ongoing concerns about safety at the location.
