In the early morning hours of May 19, 2024, the life of Kirk Stanley, a 46-year-old White/Caucasian male from Valley Center, Kansas, was tragically cut short. Police responded to a 911 call from his rural home on North West Street shortly before 2 a.m. and found him suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper body. Emergency services transported Stanley to a nearby hospital, but his injury proved to be fatal.
Present at the scene was Stanley's 22-year-old girlfriend, who had made
the emergency call. She was taken into custody for questioning regarding the shooting. Investigators later indicated that the events leading to the fatal incident were related to a domestic violence situation between the couple. After a forensic examination was completed, the young woman was released from custody. A firearm was recovered by law enforcement at the residence.
As the investigation progressed, the case was presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for review. In late June, the police chief announced that, for the time being, no charges would be filed in connection with Kirk Stanley's death. The possibility that the shooting was an act of self-defense was cited as a reason for this decision. The case remains open, and authorities have stated that charges could be pursued in the future should new evidence come to light.
