In the vibrant city of New Orleans, a tragedy unfolded on the evening of April 28th, during the first weekend of Jazzfest. Hilbert Walker III, a 23-year-old man, was diligently working his shift as a waiter at the iconic Mandina's Restaurant in Mid-City. As he was waiting on tables outside the establishment, his life was abruptly cut short in a hail of gunfire.
The violent act not only claimed Walker's life but also resulted in the injury of a 54-year-old female tourist from Chicago, who was dining inside when she was struck by a stray bullet.
The community was left reeling from the senseless act of violence that took a promising young man's life. Walker was remembered as a standout student at Sophie B. Wright Charter School, where he had been the drum major and quarterback during his senior year. Friends, family, and former coaches recalled him as a respectful and hardworking individual with natural leadership abilities. Both his father and brother also worked at Mandina's, making the loss a deeply personal blow to the well-regarded family and the restaurant's close-knit staff. In the days that followed, a memorial of flowers and candles grew outside the restaurant as the community mourned.
The investigation into the targeted shooting quickly identified a primary suspect. U.S. Marshals and the New Orleans Police Department apprehended 22-year-old Kyron Fazande in Houston, Texas. Following his arrest, Fazande was extradited back to New Orleans to face charges of second-degree murder for the death of Hilbert Walker III and attempted second-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the tourist. Authorities have indicated the involvement of a second, as of yet unidentified, suspect in the shooting. While in Texas, Fazande also became the suspect in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy that occurred just days after the incident at Mandina's. Upon his return to Louisiana, a judge ordered Fazande to be held in the Orleans Parish prison without bond. While an arrest has been made, a motive for the shooting has not been publicly released by investigators.
