A routine afternoon at St. Helena College and Career Academy in Greensburg, Louisiana, turned tragic on September 12, 2023, when 16-year-old Vernon Gordon Jr., a male student and football player, was shot and killed in the school's parking lot. The incident, which unfolded around 3 p.m. during dismissal, sent shockwaves through the close-knit community. Two other students were also injured in the shooting.
Gordon was the nephew of the school's principal and the son of an assistant football coach.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift arrest of a 14-year-old student, Christopher Williams. Authorities initially pointed to bullying as a potential motive for the deadly act, though it was later stated that this was never definitively proven. The St. Helena Parish Sheriff's Office charged the young suspect with second-degree murder, aggravated second-degree battery, illegal possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm in a gun-free zone. In a subsequent court proceeding, Christopher Williams, then 16, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
