In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 13, 2024, the Broussard Police Department responded to a call on Leisure Field Drive. There, they discovered the body of 18-year-old Paul Bernard Jr., a male resident of Maurice and native of Lafayette. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Known affectionately as 'Lil Paul,' he was described as a vibrant and respectful young man with a heart of gold.
He was a father to a daughter named Nova.
Paul was a passionate athlete who enjoyed playing basketball and football, and also found joy in the world of gaming. He was known for his love, kindness, and selflessness, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him. His contagious smile and his close relationship with his mother were defining features of his personality. He attended Comeaux High School and North Vermillion High School.
In the wake of the shooting, an investigation was launched, and authorities urged anyone with information to come forward. The investigation led to the arrest of three individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. The Broussard Police Department, along with Crime Stoppers, sought the public's assistance in gathering details to piece together the events that led to Paul Bernard Jr.'s untimely death. Funeral services were held for him on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at David Funeral Home of Lafayette.
