On January 12, 2018, the body of 23-year-old Skyler Barry, a male resident of Broussard, Louisiana, was discovered near a house under renovation on Regal Drive. The investigation into his death quickly revealed a grim connection to another homicide that occurred on the same night.
Authorities determined that Skyler Barry had been shot and left at the Broussard location.
The case took a darker turn when the body of 28-year-old Justin Zeno of Lafayette was found inside a burning vehicle on Belleau Street in Lafayette. The Lafayette and Broussard Police Departments launched a joint investigation, believing the two murders were related.
The investigation led authorities to identify two suspects: 19-year-old Tre'von Norris Woods and 29-year-old Christopher Wayne Burns. Believing the motive for the killings was at least partially robbery, investigators tracked the suspects to Kentucky, where they were apprehended. Both Woods and Burns were subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Skyler Barry and Justin Zeno.
During the investigation, one of the suspects confessed to the murders. It is believed that both Barry and Zeno were killed in Broussard. After the shootings, Zeno's body was allegedly moved to Lafayette, placed in a vehicle, and set on fire. All four men were reportedly acquainted with one another. Following their arrest, Woods and Burns awaited extradition back to Louisiana to face the charges against them.
