In the late hours of a Saturday night in Natchez, Louisiana, the life of 19-year-old Cameron D'Vaughn Jackson of Natchitoches was tragically cut short. On March 2, 2024, a barrage of gunfire erupted near an apartment complex in the 200 block of Highway 119, marking a violent end to the young man's life and leaving a community in shock. Jackson was a male.
The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office received reports of shots fired at approximately 10:20 p.m.
While deputies were en route, they received another report of a vehicle that had crashed in a ditch near the apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered a chaotic scene with Jackson and two other individuals inside the vehicle, all suffering from gunshot wounds. A fourth person had also been shot. Emergency medical services were dispatched, and the victims were transported to a regional trauma center. Despite the efforts of first responders, Cameron D. Jackson was pronounced dead on arrival. The other three victims sustained injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to life-threatening.
Investigators from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office began the arduous task of piecing together the events of that fatal night. Their preliminary findings indicated that as Jackson and the other occupants were leaving the apartment complex in a 2010 Lincoln MKZ, one or more unidentified individuals opened fire on their vehicle. The hail of bullets caused the driver to lose control, a vehicle to careen off the road and crash. Detectives recovered over 60 bullet casings from the crime scene, a testament to the intensity of the assault.
In the wake of the shooting, the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident as a homicide. At the time of the initial reports, the suspect or suspects remained at large, having fled the scene with no apparent witnesses coming forward immediately after the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the NPSO Criminal Investigations Bureau or Natchitoches Crime Stoppers. As of now, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the death of Cameron D'Vaughn Jackson.
