In a quiet Mandeville neighborhood, a Friday evening in July turned tragic, leaving two people dead in a violent domestic dispute. The life of 48-year-old Laina Lee was cut short on July 5, 2024, in a harrowing series of events that unfolded in front of law enforcement.
That evening, officers from the Mandeville Police Department arrived at a residence in the 700 block of Heavens Drive to conduct a welfare check.
As they approached the home, the quiet was broken by the sound of a woman's screams coming from within. Moments later, Lee fled the house, desperately telling the officers that a man inside was trying to kill her.
Her plea for help was tragically cut short when the man emerged from the home, armed with a gun. He pursued Lee and shot her multiple times. The officers on the scene immediately engaged with the armed man. They attempted to de-escalate the situation, and one officer deployed a taser. However, the man then raised his weapon and pointed it at the officers. In response, a Mandeville police officer fired their weapon, striking the suspect.
Both Laina Lee and the man who shot her were transported to a local hospital, but neither survived their injuries. They were both pronounced dead. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident at the request of the Mandeville Police Department. As the suspect was killed at the scene, there will be no arrests or trial in connection with Lee's death.
