In the early hours of Sunday, October 27, 2024, a double shooting inside a home in Old Jefferson claimed the life of Malik Veal, a 28-year-old Black man. The incident, which also left another man seriously wounded, shattered the pre-dawn quiet on a residential street in the New Orleans area. Malik’s last known address was in New Orleans.
The violence unfolded around 3:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Brooklyn Avenue.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office received several 911 calls reporting the shooting and dispatched deputies to the scene. Inside the residence, they discovered two men who had been shot. Malik Veal was killed in the attack and was later identified by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office. The second victim, a 54-year-old man, was wounded and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation moved swiftly, and authorities identified a suspect in the shooting. Later that same day, police arrested 35-year-old Justin Winfield in connection with the incident. According to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, he was booked on serious felony charges for his alleged role in the violent encounter.
Winfield was charged with one count of first-degree murder for the death of Malik Veal and one count of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of the surviving victim. By the Monday following the incident, the 54-year-old man was reported to be in stable condition at the hospital. Following Winfield’s arrest in October 2024, the case proceeded into the judicial system for prosecution.
