On the evening of March 27, 2023, in the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, 15-year-old Jaquan Slaughter was shot and killed. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. in a parking lot at the intersection of 28th and Broadway. Responding to reports of a shooting, Louisville Metro Police Department officers found Jaquan with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later officially identified him.
The investigation into Jaquan's death uncovered a connection to a car crash that had happened earlier that evening near the same intersection. While police stated the crash was 'directly tied' to the homicide, they did not believe the individuals in the other vehicle were involved. Further complicating the events of that night, a man later drove himself to the University of Louisville Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police determined he was a second victim from the same shooting incident. The relationship between Slaughter and the other man was not disclosed in the initial reports.
In the days following the shooting, the Louisville Metro Police Department had not made any arrests and had not identified any suspects. They continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting to understand the role of everyone involved. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that could aid in their investigation, asking witnesses to contact their anonymous tip line.
