In the late hours of a July night in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a tragic series of events unfolded that would end the life of Ayanna E. Morgan, a 21-year-old female student at Western Kentucky University. On July 23, 2023, at the Muse apartment complex, an exchange of words escalated into a fatal confrontation in the parking lot. Responding to calls of an assault in progress, police arrived to a chaotic scene where a man was desperately trying to help Morgan as she struggled for breath.
She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation that followed began to piece together the moments leading to her death. It's alleged that Morgan had approached a group of individuals with a handgun following a verbal dispute. A physical altercation ensued, during which authorities say twin brothers, Malik and Malcolm Jones, assaulted her. Investigators believe that during the struggle, Morgan was shot with her own weapon by Malik Jones. As the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, Morgan was also struck by the SUV. She was rushed to a local medical center and then airlifted to a hospital in Nashville, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead the following morning.
The Bowling Green Police Department quickly launched a manhunt for the primary suspect, Malik Jones, for whom an arrest warrant for murder was issued. He was considered armed and dangerous. Several months later, U.S. Marshals apprehended him in Detroit, Michigan. His twin brother, Malcolm Jones, was also taken into custody and faced charges of complicity to murder and tampering with physical evidence. A third individual, Kobee Lancaster, was identified as the alleged driver of the getaway vehicle and was charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree assault and hindering prosecution. The legal proceedings have since been navigating claims of self-defense from the primary suspect's defense.
