In a quiet home on Blue Bell Way in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a domestic tragedy unfolded, ending the life of 77-year-old Mary Thomas. On the evening of January 9, 2024, law enforcement responded to the residence to find her deceased in her bed from a gunshot wound. What initially was presented as a possible self-defense situation quickly unraveled into a confession of a troubled marriage that had reached a violent end.
The initial call to 911 was made by the daughter of Mary and her
husband, Terry Thomas, who was 76 at the time. She reported a disturbing phone call from her father in which he claimed to have shot his wife. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, Terry Thomas offered a conflicting account, initially stating that his wife had attempted to stab him, and in the ensuing struggle, she took the gun and shot herself. However, the scene in the bedroom showed no signs of a struggle, and no knife was recovered.
While being treated for breathing difficulties at a local medical center, Terry Thomas's story began to change. He admitted to detectives that he and his wife had been experiencing marital problems for many years. He claimed that he had gone into the bedroom to try and reconcile with his wife when she produced a handgun, leading to a struggle during which the gun discharged. This account, however, was contradicted by another phone call he made to his son, in which he confessed that he had grown tired of arguing with his wife and had shot her, expecting to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Further investigation revealed that the. 22 caliber handgun used in the shooting, found on Terry Thomas's side of the bed, had been reported stolen in Florida in 2014. Based on his conflicting statements and the evidence gathered, Terry Thomas was arrested and charged with murder and receiving a stolen firearm. He was held at the Warren County Regional Jail on a $500,000 cash bond. In the following months, the legal process moved forward, with a grand jury indicting him on the initial charges. Ultimately, in March 2025, Terry Ernest Thomas, then 77, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter. As part of a plea agreement, a 15-year prison sentence was recommended. During his plea, he claimed that his wife had pointed the gun at him and that it went off when he grabbed for it, a stark contrast to his earlier confession to his son.
