In the early hours of a Friday in Lexington, Kentucky, the life of 25-year-old Jaquan Grundy was tragically cut short. Just before 2 a.m. on September 27, 2024, police were called to the 1400 block of Russell Cave Road where they discovered Grundy with a gunshot wound. The Louisville man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and died.
The investigation into Grundy's death, which marked the city's 12th homicide of
the year, quickly got underway. While initial reports did not name a suspect, the Lexington Police Department utilized the city's FLOCK license plate readers, the Real-Time Intelligence Center, and FUSUS camera software to identify a person of interest.
This technological approach to the investigation proved successful. On the Thursday following the shooting, an arrest was made. Steven McGaughy, 30, was taken into custody and is now facing multiple charges, including murder, first-degree wanton endangerment, and first-degree criminal mischief in connection with the fatal shooting of Jaquan Grundy. McGaughy is currently being held in the Fayette County Detention Center.
