In the early evening of December 4, 2023, the life of 44-year-old Billy Spivey Jr., a Black / African American male known affectionately to friends and family as "Dunnie," was tragically cut short on the streets of Springfield, Massachusetts. Just after 6 p.m., the sound of gunfire prompted a ShotSpotter activation in the vicinity of the 100 block of Albemarle Street. Springfield police officers were dispatched to the scene, where they discovered Spivey suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center for emergency treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries later that same evening, with his date of death officially recorded as December 5, 2023.
Billy Spivey Jr. was remembered by loved ones as a "devoted friend and family member and the life of every party." In the wake of his sudden and violent death, his family organized a GoFundMe campaign to help with the unexpected funeral expenses. His passing marked the 31st homicide in the city of Springfield that year, leaving a community to mourn and investigators to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
The investigation into Spivey's murder was a collaborative effort between the Springfield Police Homicide Unit, under the direction of Captain Trent Duda, and the Hampden District Attorney's Murder Unit. For months, detectives worked to identify a suspect. A significant breakthrough in the case came on February 14, 2024, when an arrest warrant was issued for Jean Mercado, a 32-year-old man from the neighboring city of Holyoke.
On the morning of February 21, 2024, a joint team of law enforcement officers, including members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit, the Massachusetts State Police VFAS, and the Hampden County Sheriff's Department, located and apprehended Mercado inside an apartment on Quincy Street in Springfield. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently faced a host of charges related to the death of Billy Spivey Jr. These charges included murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license, and carrying a loaded firearm without a license. In addition to the charges directly related to the homicide, Mercado also faced several other offenses, including operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and possession with the intent to distribute a Class B drug. His arraignment was scheduled for the afternoon of his arrest at the Springfield District Court.
