In the early morning hours of May 29, 2021, a sequence of events unfolded in Springfield, Massachusetts, that would tragically end the life of 37-year-old Abushante Jennings, a Black/African American male. At approximately 4:10 a.m., Springfield Police responded to a call of shots fired on Lionel Benoit Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered Jennings on Bertil Hammarlof Road suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The investigation into Jennings' death revealed a harrowing story of a man who lost his life while trying to be a good Samaritan. On that fateful morning, Arthur Waters, then 44, had beaten, threatened, and kidnapped a woman. The woman managed to get away from Waters and call a friend for help. When her friend arrived by car, she flagged them down. Jennings, who was a passenger in the vehicle, got out to help the distressed woman. It was at this moment that Waters approached and shot Jennings multiple times.
The Springfield Police Department's Homicide Unit, in conjunction with the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Murder Unit, launched an investigation that led them to Arthur Waters. In September 2021, Waters was located and arrested in Maryland on a fugitive from justice warrant. He was subsequently extradited to Massachusetts to face charges. In December 2023, a jury found Arthur Waters guilty of first-degree murder, kidnapping while armed with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, two counts of assault and battery, and two counts of intimidation of a witness. For the murder of Abushante Jennings, Waters was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
