In the late morning of Wednesday, April 3, 2024, the life of a 43-year-old Springfield woman, Angela Mercado, was tragically cut short. The Black / African American female was in a parking lot on Riverdale Road in West Springfield when a disturbance led to her being shot. Police were dispatched to the scene just before 11 a.m. after receiving 911 calls.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Mercado bleeding from a bullet wound.
Emergency paramedics quickly transported her to Baystate Medical Center in a desperate attempt to save her life. Despite their efforts, Angela Mercado succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Her sudden and violent death left the community in shock and mourning.
The investigation into the homicide moved swiftly, and authorities identified a suspect. Roman Holguin, a 37-year-old man from Springfield, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The Hampden County District Attorney's Office announced that Holguin had been charged with murder.
Following his arrest, Roman Holguin was arraigned and is being held without bail as he awaits trial. The specific circumstances that led to the shooting and the nature of the relationship between Mercado and Holguin have not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement officials as the case proceeds through the legal system.
