In the pre-dawn hours of November 19, 1978, the quiet of a rest area off Route 5 in West Springfield, Massachusetts was shattered by an act of brutal violence that would leave a community shaken and a mystery unsolved for decades. It was there that a patrolling officer discovered a green Dodge pickup truck with a damaged window and blood in and around it.
The grim discovery led the officer over a nearby guardrail where the bodies of 18-year-old white female Theresa Marcoux and 20-year-old Mark Harnish were found. Both had been shot multiple times.
Theresa, a student at East Longmeadow High School who worked as a clerk at a local hardware store, was described as someone who "loved to laugh and always had a smile on her face". She and Mark, a quiet and polite young man who worked at a car repair shop, had attended the same high school. They were last seen alive leaving a friend's party at around 12:30 a.m. on the morning their bodies were found. Investigators determined that the couple had been shot inside the pickup truck before their bodies were moved to the spot where they were discovered. Despite a thorough investigation at the time, which included the recovery of spent projectiles, no firearm was ever found. A crucial piece of evidence, a latent fingerprint found in blood on the passenger side window, was collected but could not be matched to a suspect at the time. The crucial break came when investigators learned that the West Springfield Police Department had Joley's fingerprints on file from a taxicab license application he had made in 2000. Fingerprint analysts were able to match his left thumbprint to the latent print that had been carefully preserved from Mark Harnish's truck all those years ago. Further investigation revealed that Joley was a licensed gun owner in 1978 and had purchased a Colt handgun just a month before the murders. On October 30, 2024, 71-year-old Timothy Joley was arrested at his home in Clearwater, Florida, and charged with the murders of Theresa Marcoux and Mark Harnish. He is awaiting extradition back to Massachusetts to face trial, bringing a long-awaited sense of potential justice to a case that had remained unsolved for nearly half a century.
