In the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, on the evening of September 23, 2024, the life of 19-year-old Quami J. Clarke, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short by gun violence. At approximately 9:22 p.m., Boston Police officers patrolling the Mildred Hailey Boston Housing Authority Apartments on Centre Street heard multiple gunshots. Responding to the sound, they discovered Clarke suffering from several gunshot wounds in the area of 277 Centre Street.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The ensuing investigation revealed a sprawling crime scene, with police cordoning off an extensive area stretching to Heath Street and discovering multiple weapons. In the immediate aftermath, another 19-year-old from Boston, Edwin Vinales, was seen fleeing the scene. He was apprehended and arrested after allegedly discarding a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine. Vinales was arraigned in Roxbury District Court on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, a large-capacity firearm, and ammunition, and was held without bail. His attorney urged caution against directly linking him to the fatal shooting.
For months, the investigation into Clarke's death continued. Then, on January 10, 2025, the Boston Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit, with assistance from Quincy Police, made a significant breakthrough. They executed an arrest warrant in Quincy, taking 18-year-old Jason Douglas into custody. Douglas was subsequently charged with the murder of Quami J. Clarke. In addition to the murder charge, he faced counts of possession of a large capacity feeding device, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, and carrying a firearm without a license as a second offense. Douglas was booked and awaited arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court.
Quami Clarke was remembered as a kind and charismatic young man with an "absolutely contagious smile." Having recently graduated from Excel High School on September 10, 2024, he was cherished by his family and friends. In the wake of the tragedy, a memorial was set up in the neighborhood, and the community mourned the loss of a life filled with promise. The Boston Police Department urged anyone with further information to come forward to assist in their ongoing investigation.
