In a tragic turn of events on a late summer evening, 23-year-old Matthew Hamilton, a male, lost his life in a fatal shooting in Indianapolis. The incident, which also resulted in the death of another man, unfolded on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at a BP gas station situated at 30th and Cold Spring Road on the city's near northwest side.
According to court documents, Hamilton was at the gas station with a female companion when the altercation occurred.
The woman informed investigators that the other man, identified as 23-year-old Darren Marion Douthit Jr., shot Hamilton. In response, she stated that she shot Douthit. After the exchange of gunfire, she immediately called 911 for assistance. At present, she is not facing any charges related to the incident.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of another individual, Marius Coffee. Court documents reveal that Coffee was allegedly driving the vehicle that Douthit was in prior to the shooting. He reportedly told investigators that he was aware that Douthit was in possession of a firearm and intended to 'take something' when he was let out at the gas station. Coffee is now facing a felony murder charge in connection with the case. The family of the accused has raised questions regarding the felony murder charge.
