Nilan Joric Zyan Pearson, a 23-year-old male, became the city's 29th homicide victim of 2023. His death, caused by a gunshot wound to the chest, was the culmination of a dispute at a house party.
The night of December 11, 2023, began as a birthday celebration hosted by friends.
Concerned about potential violence, the hosts had arranged for a friend to act as security, patting down guests for weapons as they arrived. Despite these precautions, a firearm made its way into the party with 18-year-old Charles S. Blair. Witnesses recalled that Blair had attempted to bring the gun inside multiple times but was initially prevented from doing so. Pearson, who was unarmed, arrived at the party around 1 a.m. on December 12th. As the party began to wind down and some guests were asked to leave due to their behavior, a confrontation erupted.
The dispute escalated quickly, moving from inside the house to a car outside. According to court testimony, Blair was in a vehicle when Pearson approached. An altercation ensued, and Blair fired his 9mm pistol multiple times, striking the unarmed Pearson in the chest. After being shot, Pearson ran to a nearby gas station for help. During his trial, Blair claimed he acted in self-defense, a narrative the jury ultimately rejected. He was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to 80 years in prison. Blair later appealed his conviction, arguing that the state had failed to disprove his self-defense claim and that certain evidence was improperly admitted.
