On a Tuesday afternoon, December 12, 2023, emergency personnel were dispatched to a residence on East Telegraph Hill Road near Madison, Indiana, following reports of a house fire. Upon their arrival shortly after 4:00 p.m., first responders discovered the home engulfed in flames. Firefighters bravely entered the burning structure and made a grim discovery inside: the bodies of four individuals.
Despite life-saving efforts, all four were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victims were identified as 35-year-old Naomi Briner and her three children: 12-year-old Adelia, 8-year-old Leland, and 6-year-old Iyla Briner, a female. The tragic event prompted a thorough investigation led by detectives from the Indiana State Police, who worked in conjunction with the Indiana Fire Marshal's Office and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office, among other local agencies. Autopsies were performed in Hamilton County, Ohio, to determine the cause of death for the family.
The investigation revealed a heartbreaking conclusion. Autopsy results showed that Iyla and her siblings, Adelia and Leland, had all sustained gunshot wounds that contributed to their deaths. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office officially ruled the manner of death for the three children to be homicide. The children's mother, Naomi Briner, was found to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Based on the evidence gathered and the autopsy findings, Jefferson County Prosecutor David Sutter announced that investigators had concluded Naomi Briner was responsible for the deaths of her three children before taking her own life. With the perpetrator deceased, authorities stated that they were not seeking any suspects and would not be pursuing any additional leads in the case, bringing the investigation into the devastating murder-suicide to a close.
