In the early morning hours of December 18, 2023, the life of 47-year-old Jessica Diane Stoebick, a female registered nurse, was tragically cut short in her Plainfield, Indiana, home. The perpetrator was her estranged ex-husband, 41-year-old Ryan Gibbs, who took his own life after killing her in what police have described as a murder-suicide. The incident unfolded in the 5800 block of Grevillea Lane, where police were dispatched following a report of a burglary in progress.
Upon their arrival, they discovered both Stoebick and Gibbs deceased inside the residence. Investigators determined that Gibbs had forcibly entered the home by breaking a basement window. At the time of the incident, three teenagers were present in the house but were unharmed.
The events leading up to this tragedy reveal a history of harassment and threats. Court records show that Stoebick had sought and obtained a restraining order against Gibbs in April 2023 due to stalking. Despite the protective order, Gibbs continued to harass her. In one instance, he was accused of distributing flyers with naked pictures of Stoebick, along with advertisements for drugs and sex, throughout their neighborhood. This led to his arrest for stalking, violating the protective order, resisting law enforcement, and distributing an intimate image. Although he initially evaded police, he was later apprehended in Putnam County.
As a condition of his release, the court had ordered GPS monitoring for Gibbs. However, less than two months before the fatal attack, a Hendricks County judge terminated this monitoring on November 1, 2023. This decision was made amidst an ongoing and complex legal battle that included numerous motions and hearings. At the time of the murder-suicide, Gibbs had a pretrial conference scheduled for January 17, 2024, for the pending charges against him. The finalization of their divorce had occurred in 2021, but disputes related to the settlement were still being argued in court as recently as the month before the incident.
