In the afternoon hours of May 5, 2024, a sequence of events unfolded in Kokomo, Indiana, that culminated in the tragic death of 21-year-old Marshon Kentay Burch. Emergency services were dispatched to the vicinity of East Richmond and North Ohio streets shortly after 3 p.m. following reports of a vehicle collision. Upon their arrival, they discovered a car lodged underneath a parked semi-trailer.
Two occupants of the vehicle had managed to extricate themselves from the wreckage with only
minor injuries. They informed the responding officers that the driver, Marshon Burch, was not only trapped inside the vehicle but had also sustained a gunshot wound. Firefighters worked to free Burch from the car, and he was subsequently transported to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Burch was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy was scheduled to officially determine the cause and manner of his death.
The investigation into Burch's death was immediately launched by the Kokomo Police Department. The two passengers in Burch's car were reportedly uncooperative with the initial investigation, stating they had no knowledge of the shooting or the motive behind it. In the weeks that followed, investigators appealed to the public for assistance. They released information about a newer model white Chevrolet Blazer with black trim and wheels, tinted windows, and a distinctive sticker on the rear window that was captured on surveillance footage in the area at the time of the incident. While police later located the vehicle, they did not publicly state whether the driver was involved in the shooting but expressed a desire to speak with them. As of late May 2024, no suspects had been publicly identified, and no arrests had been announced in connection with the shooting death of Marshon Burch.
