On the night of August 6, 2024, the community of Rochester, Indiana, was shaken by the tragic discovery of 42-year-old female Heidi Renee Sommers Prince. Officers from the Rochester Police Department were conducting a routine welfare check on a vehicle parked directly in front of their station at 312 Main Street around 11:00 p.m. Upon approaching the car, they discovered two unresponsive individuals inside.
Both occupants had suffered fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene, initiating an immediate homicide investigation by local authorities.
Detectives quickly identified the second individual in the vehicle as 49-year-old Keith Parsons, also of Rochester. Preliminary evidence gathered at the scene, including the recovery of a firearm found within the vehicle, led investigators to classify the incident as a murder-suicide. The authorities determined that Parsons had fatally shot Prince before turning the weapon on himself. Because the primary suspect died at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, trials, or convictions pursued in connection with the case, and law enforcement indicated that there was no continuing threat to the public.
Heidi was a dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse known for her compassionate work in long-term care facilities, including Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth. Born in Logansport, she was a mother to three children and the wife of Rusty Prince. Her unexpected death left a significant void in her family and the local nursing community, with tributes highlighting her warmth and dedication to her patients. A celebration of her life was held shortly after the incident, where friends and colleagues gathered to honor her memory.
