Vasshawn Reeves, a 29-year-old Black man from Rockford, Illinois, was killed on January 15, 2023, in a shooting that claimed two other lives and wounded two more people.

The violence erupted on a Sunday afternoon, shortly before 5 p.m., inside an apartment in the 2300 block of 23rd Street. According to Rockford’s police chief, an argument broke out among several people who were inside the residence, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Vasshawn Reeves was shot and died at the scene.

Two teenagers were also fatally wounded in the incident. Zayveon Johnson, an 18-year-old from Rockford, and a 17-year-old boy from Dallas, Texas, were transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where they both died from their injuries. Autopsies later confirmed that all three victims died from gunshot wounds.

Two other people were shot but survived. One fled the apartment and was later found injured in the 4200 block of Middlebury Avenue, nearly two miles away. The fifth victim transported himself to a Rockford hospital. Both survivors were listed in serious condition on the night of the shooting.

During a news conference two days later, police announced that an arrest had been made. The suspect, 19-year-old Jaylon Jackson of Rockford, was taken into custody on the day of the shooting after being treated for gunshot wounds he also sustained in the incident. Jackson was charged with first-degree murder.

As of January 2023, authorities were still seeking other individuals who were present inside the apartment when the shooting occurred. Police Chief Carla Redd urged anyone with information about the murders to come forward as the case against Jackson proceeded.
