On February 7, 2023, Keith Strange, a 31-year-old entrepreneur, was fatally shot in the Avalon Park neighborhood of Chicago. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. in the 8100 block of South Kenwood Avenue. Strange had visited his mother's home, where he had previously lived, and was helping a disabled cousin get into his white pickup truck. As he was taking some cleaning supplies from the truck into the family home, he was shot in the right side by an unidentified gunman.
His cousin, who was with him, was unharmed.
The shooting was captured on a Ring camera from a neighbor's home, which shows the suspect walking on the sidewalk, pulling up his hoodie, and then quickly approaching Strange. The video depicts the suspect firing at least two shots at Strange, who then drops to the ground and calls out for his mother. Strange was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The suspect is described as a Black male with a medium to heavy build, wearing a light-colored winter coat with a fur trim on the hood, a dark-colored shirt and pants, and dark-colored gym shoes with a light-colored trim. Chicago police have released surveillance images and video of the suspect in an effort to identify him and are seeking the public's help in the investigation. Family members have expressed their distress over the incident, with Strange's sister describing the close relationship between Strange and their mother. Strange was known for his love of horses, his mother, and his ability to make people laugh. The police are currently investigating whether the attack was targeted or random. As of the current date, the case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been reported.
